On average women in Africa walk 3.7 miles, one way, in search of water while leaving behind young children to fend for themselves. An estimated 790 million people lack access to improved water sources. Unclean water is a leading cause of child mortality; it robs people of health and education, and oftentimes locks them in a cycle of poverty.

Niles North HS MSA is joining forces with Helping Hand USA to build a shallow well in Uganda. This well will serve 1,000 people! A shallow well is a hole which has been dug, bored, driven or drilled into the ground for the purpose of extracting water. The source of a shallow well is an aquifer--a body of porous rock or sediment saturated with groundwater, resulting from precipitation which seeps through the soil.
