Pakistan Earthquake

History Repeats Itself 16 Years Later

In October of 2005 HHRD’S first Emergency Relief and Disaster Management (ERDM) project was in response to an earthquake that rocked Khyber Pukhtoun Khawa, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

In the early morning hours of October 7, 2021 a 5.9 magnitude earthquake devastated Harnai in southwestern Baluchistan. This shallow quake poses a more dangerous threat; the epicenter was 60 miles away from the capital city of Quetta. Initial reports by the Provincial Disaster Management Agency (PDMA) have reported 21 killed, 300 injured, and 65 livestock compromised. Infrastructure damage has been reported to over 200 homes within a 5-mile radius of the City of Harnai. As aftershocks continue to alarm residents, rescue and recovery operations continue.

HHRD in coordination with PDMA has received a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to intervene. HHRD will conduct needs assessments and provide food, shelter, non-food items, and healthcare assistance.

Situation on the Ground

The quake has affected mainly Harnai; as well as other cities and districts like Ziarat, Quetta, Sibi, Pishin, Qila Saifullah, Chaman, Ziarat, and Zhob. An emergency has been declared at all hospitals as rescue operations continue. Based on the support of donors like yourself, HHRD will consider long term rehabilitation efforts in the areas for families affected by this disaster. Currently, HHRD will provide multiple packages of support which include Survival Food packages, Household Item packages, and Mobile Medical support.
