On September 8, 2023, at 11:11 pm, central Morocco, including Marrakesh, experienced a devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8, originating from the High Atlas Mountains, 44 miles from Marrakesh. Over the following 12 hours, the tragic aftermath became clear: by 12 pm US EST on 09/09/2023, there were over a thousand reported deaths, more than 1,000 injuries, and over 200 in critical condition. Moroccan officials fear these numbers could rise further.

The Moroccan Ministry of Interior has reported a devastating loss of life in regions including AL-Haouz, Marrakesh, Ouarzazate, Azilal, Chichaoua, and Taroudant. Morocco, historically unprepared for such seismic events, was caught off guard by the destructive impact of tectonic plate collisions beneath Europe and Africa. Compounding the catastrophe, the earthquake struck during the night, potentially resulting in higher casualties as many were at home. Notably, no earthquake of this magnitude had occurred within a 300-mile radius of the epicenter since before 1,900.
