Alabama Uniting to Build Homes

Target: $75,000

Shelters Are Vital in Restoring Security, Self-Sufficiency, and Dignity

With the impact of the COVID pandemic in 2020, we all witnessed the necessity of having a home with the security and safety it provides. Our goal for this year is to provide 100 homes for Syrian refugees at camps in Jordan and Rohingya refugees at camps in Bangladesh. The total cost for each home by location is listed below, however you can also donate partial amounts towards any number of homes.

We are asking the Volunteer State to come together to help build homes for those in need.

Refugees in Jordan

Since the crisis began millions of people have left their homes, belongings and loved ones to start their lives in bordering countries. To meet the shelter needs of Syrian refugees, HHRD has, so far, provided over 1,000 micro homes also known as “Caravan Homes.” While camps can be practical, encampment results in a range of problems, including aid dependency and isolation. HHRD is committed to intervene and help alleviate this basic need. Most of the refugees in Jordan live in planned or managed camps such as Za’atari camp while others live in self-settled areas like the desert of Al-Mafraq. Regardless of where these families reside, the struggle continues as they enter over a decade of being away from their homeland.

Rohingya Refuges in Bangladesh

On March 22nd 2021, there was a fire in Cox’s Bazaar in Bangladesh creating an emergency need for shelter homes.

An estimated 1 million Rohingya refugees have made makeshift shelters their homes in what is now considered the largest refugee camp in the world located in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. The dangers of these families being in such close and unstable quarters, include the spread of diseases as well as the most recent threat: the devastating fires of 2020.
Each home consists of two rooms along with a balcony. The structure is made with bamboo and tarpaulin that can sustain high winds and rains. Homes are provided with solar powered electric fixtures, such as fans and blubs, and can house a family of six members. HHRD understands the plight of these families and hopes these shelters serve as a home away from home until it is safe to return.
