An estimated 2.2 billion people have near or distant vision impairment with almost half of these cases being preventable or yet to be addressed. It is reported that 94 million people suffer from cataract. The leading causes of vision impairment and blindness are uncorrected refractive errors and cataracts. Most of those affected are over 50; however, vision loss can occur at any age, but infants and young children are more vulnerable to develop complications if not treated early.
Through our Health Care and Nutrition Program, HHRD offers free cataract surgery to those in need in rural areas of Kenya, Mali, Nepal, Pakistan, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, Yemeni refugees in Somalia and South Africa.
Join us as we close 2021 with giving the gift of sight to those with vision impairment. Your support will not only change but save lives!
Give The Gift of Sight
Cataract is threatening people in underdeveloped countries due to lack of awareness, proper equipment, costs, and social as well as, psychological burdens.
Health inequities or inequalities in the state of healthcare lies in the distribution of health resources between varying population groups. This is mainly based on social conditions that prevent lifesaving services from reaching those who need it most. The lower one’s socio-economic status, the higher the risk of poor health. Common barriers of treatment include overwhelming costs, lack of knowledge of condition, no escort, waiting for cataract to mature, or fear of surgery.
HHRD has partnered with governments and other entities to provide these services.
When you sponsor a cataract surgery you help a patient receive free treatment that includes: • Identification of cataract patients through screenings in clinics and camps • Screening for Hepatitis B, C, & HIV • Screening for diabetes, blood pressure and other illnesses. • Surgical procedure to remove the cataract and implant Intra-ocular Lenses (IOL) on need basis • Sunglasses and Medication • Follow up • Transportation (if needed)
Give the gift of health to ensure a family in need receives preventative care and the opportunity to enjoy a lifestyle void of avoidable health risks.
