HHRD Emergency Relief Efforts
Sponsored by BAH and BAC

Target: To Support 1430 families

Heavy rainfall, in May of this year, caused the worst floods in over two decades to hit the north-eastern part of Sylhet and Sunamganj districts impacting 2 million people. Through the assistance of federal and local government and non-governmental organizations, recuperation efforts continued until increased rainfall on June 16th caused the worst flooding witnessed this century.

Millions Left Stranded In These Areas

An estimated 4 million, including 1.6 million children, are stranded as there is widespread damage to homes, water and power sources, schools, and businesses. The areas affected are: Sunamganj district town, many remote villages, and one-third of Sylhet city, Chhatak (Sunamgani), Berajpur, Noapara, Alampur, Bilpar, Dashghar, Krishnanagar, Anondonagar, Bagain, Lakshmipur, Gabindanagar, and Mohonpur areas of the Upazila.

Immediate needs include cooked meals and dry food rations. HHRD has been providing this to flood victims since May 26th, 2022, and more recently on June 21st and 22nd, 2022 to residents in Sylhet. There will further need to install tube-wells to ensure access to safe drinking water, latrines to reduce open defecation, emergency medical care, distribution of seeds for growing food, and provision of materials to repair and reconstruct damaged schools and community structures. If more assistance is received by HHRD, some of these extended projects can be considered.
