Fidya and Kaffara

Compensation Through Charity

Make Up Broken or Missed Fasts Through Charity

It may be that some Muslims are unable to fulfill their religious commitment of fasting during Ramadan due to illness or other valid reasons. Some may also want to compensate for any broken oaths etc.

The concept of fidya and kaffara in Islam help a Muslim to compensate for breaking these obligations which in turn benefit members of the larger community who are in dire need of financial assistance.

What is Fidya?

What is Kaffara?

**Outside of Ramadan, kaffara can be given to recompense for broken oaths or promises. In this instance, 10 needy people should be fed for each incident. The estimated cost is $10 per person for 10 people, which equals $100 per broken promise.
